I recently visited Switzerland in the spring, exploring much of the country including a stay in our lovely hotel in the heart of the Engadin Valley, the Waldhaus Sils. The property has been a family run operation for five generations with all the expected pomp, grandeur and tradition associated all encapsulated throughout my visit. After the beautiful train journey from Zurich – the three-hour journey made easy using our Swiss travel passes – we arrived in St Moritz to a warm smile from a member of the hotel staff alongside the complimentary shuttle service the hotel offers to each of their guests.
Peeking through the pine tree forest surrounding the property, the crisp white building draws your eye towards it the upon your entire approach. Once arriving at the door, we were met by our hosts the Dietrich family who, after greeting each guest on arrival, left us in the capable hands of their reception team swiftly showing us towards our rooms and around the grounds. After exploring the spa, reading room and the hotels very own museum, evening drew nearer and snow began to fall – at which point we sat down to enjoy a delicious dinner at the hotel’s restaurant which served fantastic local Swiss cuisine. The dinner alongside an enchanting backing track of a local pianist playing for guests and locals alike each night – it was a perfect way to start my trip.

The next morning after breakfast we were on our way across the southern side of Switzerland on the world famous Glacier Express. Travelling from St Moritz to Brig, the 360-degree windows allowed our party to see all aspects of this beautiful country – from the snowcapped peaks to the crisp blue rivers and lakes dotted throughout the journey. Alongside the scenic views we were also greeted with a 3-course lunch on the train that comes with every Kirker holidays booking. The Glacier Express continues its journey to Zermatt from here, however we departed early at Brig in order to travel up to Interlaken. During our time in Interlaken we visited the beautiful ski resort of Grindelwald, travelled to the ‘Top of Europe’ and ate delicious fondue at the Harder Kulm overlooking the town between two lakes.

The best was still yet to come for me however, Having studied history at university our final visit to the historic city of Lucerne was my favourite location. We started our day with a visit to our favourite hotel in Lucerne the Des Balances. Perfectly situated along the Reuss river overlooking the Chapel Bridge, you will be staying in an old historic inn that has been inhabited since the 11th century. Lucerne was one of the first holiday destinations for royalty and nobility alike and you can understand why as soon as you begin exploring the cobbled streets. Much of this was explored during our walking tour, where our guide showed us towards the lovely Jesuit Church of the 17th century, along the historic covered bridge in the centre of the city and the famous market square. Surrounding the city, are the stunning mountains of Rigi, which can be explored by rail or foot, the views from the top of this mountain over Lake Lucerne are some of the most impressive in Switzerland.
Switzerland is undoubtably one of my favourite destinations I have visited. The hospitality of its people, stunning scenery throughout and incredible food scene make it a must-visit location. I would definitely recommend visiting more than one location, which can be made stress free using the Swiss Travel Pass giving unlimited travel on railways, boats and most bus routes.
