This iconic hotel, in the heart of Arles and overlooking the Place du Forum is steeped in history. It was the place to be seen in the 1950s and 1960s; Picasso lived here and guests included Ernest Hemingway, Jean Cocteau and Fritz Lang. The great matadors of the 20th century also stayed here for the bullfights and there is a room in the hotel dedicated to them. The 24 rooms and two apartments have their original bathrooms and are all individually decorated with an eclectic mix of antique, Art Deco and modern furniture. There is a comfortable salon with leather sofas, adorned with old black and white photographs from a bygone age and a bar. Enjoy the restaurant’s al fresco fayre with its tables spilling onto the town square in fine weather; both the restaurant and wine bar are open from the middle of May until October. Continental breakfast.
