The first Parador outside Spain, Casa da Ínsua is an elegant Baroque mansion in Penalva do Castelo, a small village in the centre of Portugal, close to the city of Viseu. Built in the second half of the 18th century by a Spanish nobleman who was later Governor of the State of Mato Grosso in Brazil, it was restored in 2009, and converted into a Parador in 2015. The extensive gardens include formal parterres, an English-style garden and a number of rare botanical species. The Parador also houses a farm and winery, as well as a restaurant, two outdoor swimming pools and a reading and games room.
